Car lift installation: concrete floor, ceiling height, power and space requirements

Most car lift installation problems come from the floor, the ceiling and the power line, not the lift. A pre-installation checklist built on the real figures from TWINBUSCH's official foundation plan.

Car lift installation: concrete floor, ceiling height, power and space requirements
Contents

The sentence we hear most often from workshop owners: "We bought the lift, and on installation day the floor turned out to be inadequate." Almost every problem in a car lift installation comes not from the lift but from the floor it stands on, the ceiling above it and the power line feeding it. In this guide we walk through every question you need to answer before installation (concrete, space, ceiling height, electrics and installation day), using real figures from TWINBUSCH's official foundation plan and product manuals and from UMETECH product sheets.

Five questions to answer before installation

  1. How thick is the concrete floor, and what grade? If you don't know, take a core sample or check the building drawings.
  2. What is the ceiling height? It must clear both the post height and the top of a raised vehicle.
  3. Is the supply single-phase or three-phase? This directly determines the model.
  4. How much clearance is left on each side of the lift? You need room for doors to open and for an escape route.
  5. Which vehicles will you lift? Passenger cars, vans or light commercials? This sets capacity and arm length.

If you can answer these five clearly, choosing the right model and finishing installation in a single day is realistic. If one answer is missing, complete it first; the lift order comes after.

Floor: concrete grade, thickness and flatness

A two-post lift transfers the entire weight of the vehicle into the concrete through two base plates, which makes the floor the most critical part of the installation. TWINBUSCH's published foundation plan for two-post lifts requires:

RequirementValueNote
Concrete gradeC20/25 (DIN 1045-2)Formerly B25. Anchors will not hold in lower-grade concrete.
Concrete thickness200 mm (up to 4.2 t) · 250 mm (5–6 t)Reinforced concrete. Ideally the whole workshop floor is poured to this thickness.
Flatness≤ 5 mm/mThe floor must be level; a slope twists the posts and the locks won't seat properly.
New concrete28 days curingNever anchor into fresh concrete.
Minimum foundation slab4 m × 3 m × 0.2 mIf the whole floor isn't suitable, pour a slab for the lift area only, with the lift centred on it.

UMETECH product sheets give the required concrete thickness as at least 200 mm for the overhead LA204ACE and the four-post QWJ445E. For the base-plate QWJ204BCE, LA204CE and DH205CE, and for the overhead QWJ205, whose sheet gives no concrete value, check the concrete requirement in the product manual; allow for thicker concrete on 5-tonne models.

What if the existing floor is weak?

Older workshop buildings often have 120–150 mm screed or concrete of unknown grade. There are three options:

  • Local foundation slab: break out a 4 × 3 m section in the lift area and pour 200 mm of reinforced C20/25. The most common and most reliable solution.
  • H-shaped foundation or two blocks: two separate 3 × 1 m blocks 800 mm deep under the posts, or an H-shaped 350 mm foundation. For workshops that don't want to break out the whole floor.
  • Base plate reinforcement: optional reinforcement plates offered by TWINBUSCH for its 3.6–4.2 t models (TW236PE, TW242E, TW242G, TW242PE) reduce the required concrete thickness by 50 mm, so installation is possible on 150–200 mm concrete without breaking out and re-pouring.

If the lift is to be installed on a suspended floor or above a basement, the foundation must be designed by a structural engineer. This is the manufacturer's explicit condition and is not negotiable.

Space: width, depth and escape route

The lift's own dimensions are not the space it needs. Outside the posts you need room for doors to open, for the technician to move and for an escape route in an emergency. Dimensions for TWINBUSCH's standard two-post models:

DimensionTW242E / TW236PETW250 / TW260TW242G (garage)
Overall width (base plate)3,436 mm4,020 mm2,986 mm
Clearance between posts2,850 mm3,342 mm2,500 mm
Post height2,824 mm2,824–2,830 mm2,324 mm
Capacity4,200 / 3,600 kg5,000 / 6,000 kg4,200 kg

Dimensions for the UMETECH two-post models:

DimensionQWJ204BCELA204CEDH205CEQWJ204ACE (overhead)
Overall width3,486 mm3,408 mm3,730–3,890 mm-
Drive-through width2,535 mm2,550 mm2,530–2,690 mm2,830 mm
Overall height2,876 mm2,826 mm2,836 mm3,900 mm
Capacity4,000 kg4,000 kg5,000 kg4,000 kg

Add to these:

  • At least 875 mm on each side of free space (the escape-route clearance recommended in manufacturer manuals). For a TW242E or a UMETECH QWJ204BCE that means roughly 5.2 m of total width.
  • Depth: the length of the longest vehicle you will lift plus 700 mm front and rear. At least 6.4 m for a 5 m van.
  • Two lifts side by side: leave at least 1 m between the posts so a technician can work comfortably, and doors on both vehicles must open at the same time.

If space is tight but the floor is sound, the TW242G garage model fits a 3.5 m bay with its 2,986 mm overall width. If there is no space at all, the in-ground TWS318U scissor lift works even in drive-through areas: no posts, and it sits flush with the floor when lowered. From UMETECH, the in-ground double scissor QWJ630 fits within 1,920 mm overall width for the same job.

How to calculate ceiling height

The "ideal ceiling height is 185 cm" figure circulating online is wrong: 185 cm is the standing working height under a raised vehicle, not the ceiling. For the ceiling you must satisfy two conditions at once:

  1. Ceiling ≥ post height + installation margin. Posts are 2,824 mm on TWINBUSCH standard models and 2,826–2,876 mm on UMETECH base-plate models; plan on at least 3.0 m. The overhead QWJ204ACE is 3,900 mm tall including its top beam, so the ceiling must be above that.
  2. Ceiling ≥ vehicle height + lifting height + 100 mm margin. Lifting height is 1,900 mm on TWINBUSCH standard models (up to 2,060 mm with extension adapters); from UMETECH, the LA204CE and DH205CE lift 1,900 mm and the QWJ204BCE 1,800 mm.
VehicleVehicle height (approx.)1,900 mm lift (TW242E, LA204CE, DH205CE)1,800 mm lift (QWJ204BCE)TW242G (1,600 mm)
Passenger car1,450–1,550 mm≥ 3,550 mm≥ 3,450 mm≥ 3,250 mm
SUV1,650–1,800 mm≥ 3,800 mm≥ 3,700 mm≥ 3,500 mm
Panel van (Transporter)1,900–2,000 mm≥ 4,000 mm≥ 3,900 mmNot recommended

With a ceiling between 3.2 and 3.5 m the TW242G reaches full lifting height on passenger cars and small SUVs; taller vehicles are simply not raised all the way. What matters is that the lock positions can hold at any height; on TWINBUSCH lifts the safety lock engages automatically at every step.

Power: single-phase or three-phase?

Motor power is 2.2 kW on every TWINBUSCH two-post model; the difference is the supply voltage. UMETECH motors are 2.2 kW (3.0 kW on the 5-tonne DH205CE) and the models come with two supply options. Choose the model according to the supply your workshop already has; the alternative is extra wiring costs.

When your electrician runs the line, ask for: a dedicated circuit to the lift's control box, a 16 A type-C breaker, a phase-sequence check on three-phase models (with the wrong sequence the motor runs backwards and the lift won't rise) and an earth measurement. A compressed-air line is not required; the lock release is electric, and the pneumatic Air-Kit is optional.

Differences for scissor and four-post lifts

  • Surface-mounted scissor lift (TWS3510E, 1 m): no anchoring needed, a flat and sound concrete floor is enough; with the optional mobile kit it can be moved around the workshop. The fastest installation for tyre and body shops.
  • In-ground scissor lift (TWS318U): a pit is cut to the dimensions in the manual, the pit concrete is poured and the lift sits in it. Pit and drainage work must be finished before installation; this type needs the most planning. UMETECH's in-ground double scissor QWJ630 needs the same preparation. If a pit is not possible, the surface-mounted DH635 (105 mm starting height) lifts up to 1,900 mm.
  • Four-post lift (TW445): its 1,301 kg is spread over four feet, so floor loading is low; plan depth for the 4,510 mm platforms. If you will do wheel alignment, platform level is especially important. Plan depth the same way for the UMETECH QWJ445E (4,802 mm platforms) and QWJ455E (5,500 mm).

What happens on installation day

  1. Delivery and unloading: posts weigh 600–1,100 kg; a forklift or crane must be provided on site.
  2. Positioning and marking: post positions are marked according to door clearance and vehicle entry direction.
  3. Anchoring: holes are drilled, anchors of the type and depth specified in the manual are set, and the posts are levelled.
  4. Hydraulic and electrical connection: hoses, synchronisation cables and the control box are connected; oil is filled.
  5. Commissioning: unloaded lift, lock positions, synchronisation and safety tests; then a loaded test.
  6. Handover: operator training, the operating manual and the CE certificate are handed over.

If the floor, power and space are ready, installing and commissioning a single two-post lift takes one working day. You can see the production facility and installations in the field on the Factory & References page.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

On 3.6–4.2 t TWINBUSCH models, base plate reinforcement allows installation on 150–200 mm concrete. For thinner concrete, or for 5 t models and above, a local foundation slab must be poured.

The TW242E and TW242G run on 230 V single-phase; the TWS3510E and TWS3520E scissor lifts can be ordered for either 230 V or 400 V. The professional PE and Heavy-Line models need three-phase.

The TW242G, with a post height of 2,324 mm. On passenger cars you reach the full 1,600 mm lifting height; on taller vehicles the lift is stopped at one of the lock positions.

Technically possible, but we advise against it: errors in anchor depth, synchronisation or load testing void the lift's warranty, and under occupational safety law the liability passes to the business. Our team installs and hands over with the CE certificate.

Yes. Under Turkey's Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, vehicle lifts must be inspected at least once a year by an authorised body. The documents handed over at installation are requested at the first inspection.

They vary by model; we send the pit plan for the TWS318U and TWSA42UV2 at the ordering stage. The pit, its concrete and drainage must be finished before installation.
